Advertising -- How Much Do You Do?

    Just had a solicitation from someone trying to sell me a $350 Ad
    in a local magazine that realtors give out. I've had calls
    to put my name on golf benches, had dot.com companies
    call, been given free pens with my name on it, etc.

    Just wondering what level of advertising you'all do and
    if any of it is effective. I have a 1" yellow page ad and have a free
    listing with AppraiserUSA, but that's pretty much it.

    What do you do?

    Put an marketing program in place. Include Direct mail with at least a three letter sequence to the same list. If your yellow page ad lists your company name without the benefits to the client you're just like everyone else.

    Most of all you have to test and track. You have to know your numbers and return on investment.

    Be persistent and ease your clients pain

    Been so busy I've been handing out my competitors pens. Put call forwarding on my fax machine, but the appraiser caught on and blocked my calls.

    We have a free yellow page one-liner, and we're in AppraiserUSA. Our web site is from Wayne and I have pens imprinted with our company name.

    I think the best form of advertising is by word of mouth. We are fortunate to have many referrals and long time clients, so we've never needed to pay for advertising. 3-4 years ago I got talked into a $75 ad in a legal publication, listing every attorney in the area. That was the dumbest thing I ever did. Not only did we not get one call from that, but we don't actively seek work from attorneys.

    For many years I have advertised in 3 yellow page books. 2 in my city and one metropolitan. Once I figured out to have a display at with "estate and trust" and "In Alameda" I get work every week from the ads. The cost is about $250 per month and well worth the money. I also have been advertising in the local Bar association magazine for about a year. I have received a few calls but no jobs.

    I love estate work. No pressure, seldom a time requirement, and they pay in advance!

    How do I know my yellow page ads work? I always ask the caller where they got my name.

    Yellow pages and Waynes site. My web site of course.

    Most effective for me is my Yellow pages followed by my web site. I get brokers from the web site and individuals from the yellow pages. Generally speakding that is. I do get a few out of state individuals from the web site.

    I have a whole bunch of, I think, cute ads I am going to run in the local Real Estate book(s) for my Home Inspection business. Of course I make mention that I am an Appraiser. I have found in the past that advertising the Appraising didn't do much good for me. But I have also found that what works for me doesn't work in another market.

    Here is my latest add. And BTW I have new photo of me to use. Just have not got it back from the photographer yet.

    First of all, I love terrell's sig line.

    We only advertise occasionally in publications put out by significant clients and only because it'll make them happy. It's all about personal contact and communication for us. Always carry cards and rolodex cards with "appraiser" printed on top. Take a few minutes to stop and visit clients, bring some doughnuts, meet and greet at the realtor functions, just let them associate a smiling face and a person with the name and it will pay off.

    Jeff, it may have just been the way the file wrote, but there are two typo's in your ad. You left the "n" out of know(n) and see(n)
