    China is capturing the auto industry just like Japan did and is similar to what happened in the semiconductor industry. Manufacturing moved offshore (jobs) and the product was imported back to the US. It just completes the cycle of the hollowing out of America.

    But along with those jobs goes the tax base and the standard of living those jobs create.

    I am not arguing for protectionism. I am pointing to what has already happened.

    If one examines education here, it also has "hollowed out" in that the the vast majorities of graduates are not in math and science but law, liberal arts and social science. The value of our education has depreciated.

    The economy is directly related; lower wages means cheaper products so people can afford to buy them. It is called the WalMart model.
