Default Lender wants to change FHA#

Got a request to do an FHA appraisal.....No case number. Told lender I would have to have a case number before I could proceed.

They sent a "case number" but it looked bogus. Sure enough, it wasn't the correct case number.

I held out until I got a true case number.

Finished appraisal, and submitted. ( Paid at the door by the client also.)

Now, a week later, they want me to put a different case number on the report!

Ever heard of this? Of course I will be checking with the "authorities" about this one!

Obviousely, you are being scammed. I'd just tell him that FHA rules do not allow you to change the lender or case number once they have been assigned. If it all turns out to be bogus, notify the state, and FHA, and let him explain to the homeowner how he scammed the appraiser and can't use the appraisal.

Default Scammed

Thanks Tom,

I suspected so myself. I sent a reply telling them that I would be contacting FHA about this.

Ask them to send you the Case Number Assignment notification that will have your name on it along with the borrowers and the lender. If the balk at it then tell them no ticky no laundry!! That way you can verify all the information your name the borrower and also the lender that requested it. Any one of them could be altered or destined for someone else.

Ted's answer is spot on.
Someone posted here (can't remember who) recently who said they get the two page doc from the client that has all the info for the assignment. Now I always request, and get that document. Makes life alot easier.

Amen to that...does anyone know if you can go to HUD's web site and check the case number and or address? (Just to be sure you are not being scammed)

I asked them if there was some place that an Appraiser could verify FHA case #'s. Their reply.....No.

Nothing more.

My initial post has been remedied. Communication error on 2 different FHA appraisals.

If you want me to, I will attempt to find out for you through my FHA contacts. I will need the address of the property, the client/lender, and the case # they have given you.

My email: pec514 @ yahoo. com (remove the spaces)
