Default Thursdays Paddle * part 1

Since I couldn't paddle today, I built a paddle. Well I started yesterday so actually I finished a paddle today.

I have been saving this nasty piece of wood for a while now. I think it is old grown Western Red Cedar but I am not sure. It also looks a lot like mahogany but I don't think so.

Doesn't look like much does it? It was one of two diving boards on a boat house I salvaged.

Under all the dirt and weathering is a beautiful grain and along side is some samples I was considering.

I cut it up and then glued it up and let it dry overnight.

Saw it to rough shape and start working it hand planes, spoke shave and rasps.

Default Part 2

Here I was about to start working the shoulders to fit my hand.

Here it is after a lot of work with the hands tools and a lot of sanding and a coat of oil

All this is left is to take it to the water and see how it performs. Make any changes and then varnish it.

Nothing beats reclaimed wood. Nice straight checks, little to no twist.

Well, now if you get up $hit creek, you've got the paddle!

Looks a little heavy to me. How much does it weigh? Have you considered carving the blades to a more concave shape? That outta make it bite the water a little better and also lighten it up a bit.

It's very lightweight. Sorry no scales but well under 30 oz.

A concave shape is all wrong. It wouldn't generate lift (think airplane wing).
