Curious… how many of you “downstate appraisers” and/or your acquaintances (defined as those living south of 10) plan on migrating North this weekend? Contrary to the norm, whereby Northbound 75/127/131 become an autobahn to hordes of fudgies driving SUVs pulling trailers 80+ MPH… how many of you are staying home… or at least within a 50 mile radius of your residence?

Early indications (given my observations of local dining establishments, state parks/camp grounds, harbor facilities, etc) are that this may be the first time I can recall the annual July 4th “migration” be substantially less than previous years…

Reality is this ritual migration is a double edge sword… hard to live w/the fudgie invasion… but can hardly survive (economically) without them :(

I’m anxious to see how this phenomenon evolves this weekend… will gas prices keep vacationers home… or drive them north versus other vacation destinations further away?

I will be part of that invasion. I am leaving Friday morning.

The biggest antique show of the year is at the Petosky Fairgrounds. My girlfriend is a dealer and I am her assistant (move the stuff). Hopefully we will make enough money to pay for the gas in my fuel inefficient Dodge truck.

And yes, I will be pulling a trailor at around 80 MPH, but don't worry I wear my seatbelt and checkmy blind spots. I hope the traffic is easier. There is nothing like a 8 hour trip home when it should take 4.

Charley, I'll be coming up the following week for the Cherry Festival. Wife and I are running the 5K. Kids love the parade, so I'm hoping for good weather.

I'll be pulling the boat, but I keep her at 75mph. That way I can save a little gas by averaging 10 miles per gallon.

Lets see... 300 miles roundtrip at 10 mpg = 30 gallons X 4.25 per gallon = 127.50 :Eyecrazy:

Staying in the southern part of the state buddy.

WTF is up with these SUVs continuing to pass me (I am going 70)? You would have thought they would have figured out the gas mileage thing by now. You don't really save that much time by hauling ***....

Heading to Manistee. Put the boat in and probably just anchor her or drift fish.

I have a Wesco card that I receive credit for purchases towards gas discounts.

When they roll back the price for the discount both grades 87 and 89 are the same price. So I put in the 89 grade and on my way home last weekend my SUV received 3 more miles to the gallon. Any little bit helps.

Happy 4th.

I'm going to Elk Rapids to do a little toilet papering.

Gotta love E85. Get about 1-2 miles/gallon less, but it is $0.70 cheaper a gallon.

Charlie, we'll be camping with the in-laws on the Muskegon river. I hate to be termed a fudgie after living there, but what the hey, I'm happy to be where the air is clean! John, I'm taking my fishing pole, we're just a few miles outside of town. :)
Travel safe everyone!
