I need to be able to send a 'locked' and not able to be opened... electronically signed document (not an appraisal: non-proprietary) through Adobe writer.

1. How safe is this? I do NOT want a copy of 'my' signature out there.
(heard rumors of a hacker program that can open these ??

2. Does anyone have a real easy step by step 'How to for Dummies'?

Have scanner, software and enough knowlege to be dangerous.

Thanks in advance

I use Adobe Acrobat 4.0 When you finish the document select 'Save As'. In the bottom left of the pop-up will be the 'Security' option, change from 'None' to 'Standard'. The rest is self explanatory.

I saw the post about the hacker software that will allow unauthorized unlocking of the file but have not tested yet. That's way at the bottom of my 'To-Do list' after deer season closes (this Thursday :( ).

Which version of Adobe do you have? On 5.0, there is a tab marked security that is pretty self-explanatory. Hope this helps.

I have 4.0, It sounds like it is pretty intuitive, so I should manage that OK.

I am more concerned about learning whether or not an attached electronic signature would be reasonable protected. And I am no techie!

My intent is to develop an Excel spreadsheet with an imported signature...

Any thoughts?

later thought of my very own: I guess in this day of scanners if someone wanted to 'lift your signature it isn't really all that tough anyway... so I should quit worrying about that aspect?, ? ?

Bingo!

Wow! Spooky thought. Who may have your signature on file already? Perhaps an unscrupulous mortgage broker?

  Dave:

Can you even imagine a broker attempting to write in one of our individual styles, and put in adjustments in a manner that came close to our professional norm?!?!

Hey they might as well go out and work as an appraiser or something :)

I guess that I am saying that with proper documentation in our files and a paper trail, it would be pretty hard for a 'unscupulous mortgage broker' to generate a report 'with signature'.

However this does bring up the point that it is definitely in OUR BENEFIT to have a sequential file numeration system, simple or complex, where if a report suddenly appears with our signature, but does NOT fit in the sequenced order it becomes readily apparent that there is a problem.

I have a bigger concern with white-out and rescanning a bottom line figure: reprint and whee it looks real!!!

Oh well... But on this matter of document signing for which I started this thread - I sure would like to get more info on how secure it is: since I do not want to rescan any of these documents on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, but prefer to generate them as needed with authentic 'push button' signature...
