Just wondering if anyone has learned of the latest appraiser numbers in NC? (how many have dropped out) I checked the state board site, but didn't see any new statistics on remaining appraisers in the state. Apparently we will have to wait for the next AppraiserReport to come in before we find out. I hope the silver lining in the economic downturn is that it will weed out many part-timer appraisers and those who just got in for the quick buck. A market correction in appraiser numbers would be a very good thing.

The ASC website indicates a total of 3,048 appraisers. Gen - 756; Cer Res - 1,926 and Lic 366. Hope that helps!

I don't think that the numbers will change greatly, with the possible exception of the trainee category.

Many certified and licensed appraisers may quit the business, but they won't necessarily give up their license, especially given the new education requirements. They might just bow out for now, and come back later. Trainees, OTOH, don't have any real interest in holding their license, so they may simply give it up.

As evidence of this, see the NY numbers in this thread (post #9):

Last numbers I have are:
  • 859 trainees
  • 339 licensed
  • 2118 certified residential
  • 1242 certified general
The attrition rate was typical of every other year. The expansion on September 1st of allowing 3 trainees to be supervised by a certified appraiser may well stem the decline in the number of trainees.
