Are You Forced to Pay NAR Dues ?

I don't think anyone is forced.....you have a choice to join or not join. If you want to appraise you have to join to get the data.

I don't mind paying for data....MLS fees are high....but I am wiling to pay the price. However, I hate having top pay for to join my local NAR association. I HATE PAYING national, state and local NAR dues. I hate paying for luncheons I don't attend, travel expenses for board and committee members who love to travel, "NAR Image Awareness Assessment" fees.

I have no desire to associate with the vast majority of real estate sales people. My experience over 30 years has been that most of them care only about a commission and nothing else. The public agrees....real estate agents have a very poor ranking as to public trust and they have earned it. I very, very rarely act as an agent because I know that I will have to deal with some commission hungry agent that wants their money and has no regard for the buyer or seller in a transaction.

Sell me the MLS....but I could do without all the crap that you have to pay to get to the MLS......but then again....it is a choice and nobody is holding a gun to my head.

Almost forgot! What I REALLY HATE is that 3% of my NAR dues are for political lobbying and 42.3% of the state (NCAR) dues are for political lobbying. What Realtors lobby for is rarely in the best interest of the consumer or the nation but only in the best interest of themselves.

Ok... Let me rephrase the question. Are there enough appraisers that are NAR members to warrant some muscle from NAR in Washington to help with the HVCC and Fannie Mae issues that pose a threat to our industry?

The original post was never intended to complain about fees or membership.

Are you kidding?

There are 1.3 MILLION NAR members. That is about a 10-1 ratio of Realtors to appraisers. Yeah, I know some appraisers are Realtors. Even taking that into consideration the ratio is till 9-1.

I make it plain that I will NOT support their PACs in fact, it is against the law to MAKE YOU PAY THAT....DON'T DO IT.

I don't pay for PACs either.

I think you are all missing the point of my post. It's no about the cost of data. It's about being forced to be a mamber of NAR & IAR & is there enough of us in the same position to warrant help from NAR because we're members of their orginization?

I understood. I was probably one of my posts you picked up on. You are asking a valid question. At least you stand a chance of getting appraisers who are already getting charged PAC fees to organize and ask NAR for some lobbying for the money they are getting out of us. It would be an easier start than getting all the laydown appraisers to get intelligent enough to get their own PAC started.

Let me know if you find a professional cat herder. Maybe at least such a person could get a few of these forum members out of the potty box at least.

I suppose if the PAC money was mandatory as part of the fee, Appraisers could demand a bit more representation, however, in my opinion, I get every dollars worth of what I pay for in the form of data. Our missions are quite different and I dont really see where Realtors will have much issue with the HVCC .. a lender is a lender and a commission is a commission.

CAPS ARE FOR MY OLD EYES.

REALATORS HAVE THE 2ND LARGEST LOBBY IN USA. (I THINK)

THEY GENERATE MOST OF THE FANNIE BUSINESS.
THEY HAVE INSTITUTED THE MLS SYSTEM.

THEY ARE YOUR SALES FORCE- (MANY YEARS AGO APPRAISERS COULD NOT ADVERTIZE.)

HAVE THE LARGEST R.E. LIBRARY IN THE WORLD.

SO, THEY AIN'T NO FREE LUNCH-ALTHOUGH LAST Year WE DID GET ONE.

YOU PAY-YOU STAY-NO PAY DON'T USE.

IF YOU ARE TOO CHEAP TO SUPPORT ONE OF THE LARGEST INDUSTRIES IN USA, THATS YOUR CHOICE.
PAY AND BE ACTIVE. OUR LOCAL BOARDS WANT AND HAVE APPRAISERS ON THE COMMITTEES.

ONE GOOD AGENT'S INFO ON ONE ASSIGNMENT. CAN SAVE YOU ALL THE FEES YOU WILL PAY ALL YEAR.

IN OUR APPRAISAL CHAPTER, OF THOSE ACTIVE, 25% HOLD A BROKERS LIC.

I KNOW MANY OF YOU DISAGREE, WE WILL STILL BE FRIENDS.

RESPECTFULLY-ARKIE ED

Mr. Berry,

I'm rapidly Googling beans in Spain and attempting to connect the dots to your post and what the O.Pster was asking.

However, it does bug me the way they bury the PAC dues. It is a pretty small amount of money, but it bugs me that they try and swindle it from people by including it as part of the bill. (They did make it more obvious this year, though).

That bugs me too and even though I'm also a Realtor, I still don't pay it. Reminds me of a certain charity organization and how they tell you what you should contribute.
