I asked yesterday about using appraisal classes to bulk up one's work hours for licensing. I want to write this here, because there is more traffic. Okay, I wrote to the AQB and they responded. I will print this below. Can anyone please make sense of this for me? Thanks.

"Hello, I am writing today for information about obtaining work hours for license upgrade in Califorina. According to the OREA, AQB approved case studies and classes can be used to fullfill up to half of the required work hours for license upgrade. However, nobody at the OREA has had any idea what this means. "They" have told me to write to you, about this option."

"The AQB’s Real Property Criteria allows up to 50% of your experience hours to be obtained via case studies or practicum courses. State regulatory agencies do not have to allow this. Also, state regulatory agencies can approve these courses on their own, or require AQB Course Approval Program approval for this first. If your state does require we approve these courses first-we have yet to approve one from an education provider."

Seems like it is up to the states to approve this method of obtaining experience hours.

My interpretations should be considered suspect as I am not a lawyer.

It sounds like they are saying that the courses must have some hands on experience to them. I'm not aware of any normal CE courses that do this. It also appears that they are saying it is up to the states to decide. This would typical since the states are required to certify their appraisers. The AQB is basically saying it's the state's responsibility to determine whether or not using courses for your logs is acceptable or not. So, write you state board.

...AQB’s Real Property Criteria allows up to 50% of your experience hours to be obtained via case studies or practicum courses

Virtually all 'experience' requirements have the 50% loophole. AI has it to let
Phd's get their MAIs, so they'll write those practical and fascinating articles in the
Appraisal Journal. But if your state hasn't approved a process, then I'd forgetaboutit.

It says that it is allowed by AQB to use appraisal case study courses for up to 50% of your work experience but it is up to state agencies to accept them or not. The state agencies have to approve those courses on their own and if they are not familiar with those courses, the AQB course approval program can approve them first if schools offering those courses apply for their approval from AQB approval course.

Okay, here is the language from the OREA, and notice they tell you to go to the AQB, but the AQB tells you to go to the OREA. I am just trying to figure out what are they talking about? A lot of you will think this is horrible, but in a very slow market, and in a very little town, this could be just the thing me, and some others could use.

"Practicum Courses
Effective January 1, 2008, applicants may gain up to 50% of
the experience requirements through case studies and practicum
courses that are approved by the AQB Course Approval
Since OREA does not approve case studies and practicum
courses, information for this program must be obtained from
the AQB."

You need to find the name of any school that offers those case study courses and then ask them if they are approved by AQB. Mabe AI is offering them. if they said yes, then ask them if they are approved by OREA. If they said yes, then give their names to OREA and ask them if they accept them for up to 50% of work experience. It is up to OREA to accept them or not.

Thank you for helping me understand this!

It would be great if states required a certain amount of experience from such a course with the course consisting of 20 to 30 appraisals of varying levels of complexity complete over a semester or two.
