Hi All,
I'm absolutely flumoxed.
Am running Windows XP and using an HP2000 printer. Everything is great between the two except that Word 2002 documents crash every single time. I cannot print any document from Word 2002. Even if I save that file as a .pdf file in Acrobat!!!!
I can print .pdf files of my appraisals. I can print MS Excel. I can print stuff off the web. I can print SFREP.
I'm assuming this is a problem with Word 2002 and my printer, but I just cannot figure this out.
Any of you computer gurus out there know any answer to this?
I have a short narrative report (you know, one of those appraisal assignments that refuses to fit into any available form) that has to go out TODAY!!!! And I can't get it out of the computer. Not to mention the HOURS I have spent fiddling with this. Am nearing the end of my patience.

HELP!!!!

Frustrated in Friday Harbor

I had a similar problem with Office Pro 2000. Guess what the problem was--Norton Antivirus 2002. It seems wheneverI went to print from Word, the antivirus program triggered something, with the top bar at the screen blinking and an orange bar at the bottom also blinking. Spent 2 weeks trying to sort things and the problem stopped when I switched from Norton to McCaffe.

Try disabling any new programs you might have installed at the time you started having the problem. Start with the antivirus first.

Be prepared, it will be a time "eating" ordeal.

Good luck!!!

I would go on line and see if there is a patch that is needed with Windows XP and MS Word.

Nancy,

For now a probable fix:

Using Mouse and holding down left finger'd key .. swipe your entire written-up report and 'copy.'

Go to one (or more) of your addendum pages and 'paste' into those pages .. then print the addendum pages as your report. Alternatively, 'paste' into notepad or wordpad and accomplish the same thing ..

Thank you for your help.

While I was waiting for any response to my plea, I called the Dell tech support folks. After spending $29 and about 15 minutes on the line with an "English as a 2nd language" techie who walked me through changing things in the registry, etc., his solution was to plug in another printer (HP1100 LaserJet--B&W only). It prints so, according to techie, problem solved. Uh, what about color, I ask. Oh, well, its obviously a printer problem, bye!!

Julio, you should get a job with Dell tech support. I disabled Norton AV, shut down everything else, uninstalled & reinstalled the printer and

YIPPEE!!!!

I guess the answer is to disable Norton AV every time I want to print from Word.

THANK YOU!!! Once again, this proves the value of the Forum over other sources of "expert" assistance.

Hi All,

Though I would update you on the XP vs. MS Word vs. Norton AV 2002.....

Based on Julio's advice, I disabled Norton AV in order to print. However, being basically lazy and also somewhat impatient, I figured I wouldn't be happy putting up with that distraction every time I want to print something and the hassle if I forget and it crashes and corrupts the printer driver.

Went looking through Norton's site under FAQ, took some looking, but I found a similar type of problem described.....the answer was to go into the setup portion of Norton AV and find the place where it places some sort of special protection on MS Office Suite products. I unchecked that little box and everything seems to be OK. It doesn't effect the level of protection to the system, just changes the way NAV handles MS Office.

We be happy here!!!! :D :D :D
Thanks again for all your help!
Nancy
