how about adobe homes.

Sure, why not. Some codes do not allow adobe to be the structural support and may require some sort of framework. Here adobe is a preferred construction method due to insulation value and appearance. Of course we do not have 8.0 earthquakes either. Check with your building department. It might be considered unreinforced masonry which is a no-no in seismic zones.
