I found this ad on Craigslist in Cleveland, Ohio. Really quite sad:

home foreclosure--will barter ANYTHING in home for $$ or reliable car - $1 (Elyria)

Date: 2008-07-08, 4:18AM EDT

Our home is being foreclosed on and we are willing to trade anything in this home (windows, patio doors, central airconditioning, etc.) for reasonable price or dependeble, well-running car.

In the land of the homeless, a car is the king.

Notice they are also offering to strip their house.

Hopefully they will try to work something out with the bank, because not only will they ruin their credit walking away, but also might face fines, jail, etc. due to stripping out the house. I believe I read something about a mortgage broker receiving a jail sentence recently for doing the same thing on a house he owned that was foreclosed upon.

Cleveland is in a huge mess; so is Detroit and so are a number of MidWest cities. Cars are more expensive than some of these houses. It is really sad!

Great idea!! Dismantle your house and sell it for parts.

Don't stop on the inside of the house though - I'm seeing REOs here where plants and trees, (some can be quite expensive), are removed also.

Ok..so here's a follow up to yesterdays Craigs listing:

home foreclosure--will barter ANYTHING in home for $$ or reliable car (Hickville)

Our home is being foreclosed, not only are we real losers, but now we will let you loot the house for anything of value. We will consider all trades for cash, vodka, wine, gas cards, McDonalds Arch cards. Aren't you glad we don't live by you!

I hope that they enjoy their time in jail with their McDonalds Arch cards... they can use them to feed themselves and whoever takes the stuff inside the house as, in my not-so-lawyerly opinion, that's equivalent to receiving stolen goods (recommend verifying that with an ACTUAL lawyer :icon_mrgreen:).

The other half of me thinks that this listing is complete and utter BS. I'm surprised that CraigsList hasn't flagged it for removal.

At this point there is nothing illegal about their actions. It is only when they fail to restore the house that a problem occurs. The lender files an insurance claim to repair the damage, then the insurance company tracks them down. One is better off being stalked by the IRS than an insurance company. :new_all_coholic:

I don't think intentional damage by a named insured is covered under any policy. Claim denied.

You are correct though, an insurance company will hunt you down and pester you until for the rest of your life if you owe them money.

No, they will typically pay the claim.

Intentional damage is a named exclusion on the HO-3 along with acts of war, flooding, earthquakes, nuclear accidents, animals birds and fish, failing to protect the property after a loss, and wear and tear among others.

I did let my independent adjuster license lapse, maybe it's changed since then but I seriously don't think so. If that is something they are paying right now, with the amount of claims they will be getting you can expect that policy to change shortly.

They also won't pay for vandalism or frozen pipes in a house that has been unoccupied or vacant for more than 30 days.
