Paxton sues Austin church that is largest provider of homeless services in Travis County
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is suing a church that is the largest provider of homeless services in Travis County,
alleging its South Austin headquarters has become a “magnet” for drug and criminal activity and poses a “drastic” threat to the surrounding neighborhood, including an elementary school.
Paxton’s lawsuit seeks a temporary injunction that, if approved, would force Sunrise Community Church’s Homeless Navigation Center to close.
“Drug activity and criminal behavior facilitated by this organization have hijacked an entire neighborhood,” Paxton said in a news release announcing the lawsuit.
The church
, located on Menchaca Road just south of Ben White Boulevard, began offering homeless people services in 2015. Its center is funded in part by tax dollars, with the city having contributed more than $2.5 million since 2021, according to
financial records. Just last week, the
Travis County Commissioners Court approved $350,000 to help fund services there.
