I have used Wintotal in the past, but switched over to ACI two years ago when the other appraisers in the office switched. Alamode sent me a demo for Athena. I loaded it, then later tried to go back into my ACI (32 bit program) to do some reports. . .apparently Wintotal changed some system files and I can't run ACI now.

Alamode's tech support says its ACI's problem. . .said that they are too "lazy to upgrade their system files". Told me to call ACI.

My problem is that ACI's tech support is open only during normal business hours.

Has anyone had this problem with Wintotal demo screwing up system files for ACI? How did you fix it? :x

I also loaded the demo and I can't figure out how to uninstall it. Any ideas?

Mark:
My first move would be to simply re-install ACI. I've done it occassionally, with no loss of files or settings.
A re-install should clear up any system files that Alamode might have corrupted.
Shame on Alamode tech support for bad mouthing the competition. That shows real class :!:

I couldn't figure out how to uninstall the program either. You can't do it from the Control Panel like ACI and other programs. I called Wintotal and they sent me a long set of directions that had me literally delete files directly in several locations, and delete a reference in win.ini.

I won't be using Wintotal in the future if their program is so unconventional and difficult to uninstall. I also don't like the fact that it crashes the competitors program.

Hi Everyone,

Hardware/software are kind of a hobby for me. Everyone should have a few GREAT little utilities on their machines. One that I would highly recommend is from McAfee. It's called QuickClean Lite. It will remove accumulated junk and unwanted programs, including internet cash and cookies from your PC's. Best of all, it is very user friendly. It is easy to use. No books required. :D Most of the utilities that I have used either don't work, are too expensive, or simply too hard for the average non-techie to use. :? McAfees' web site is a bit tricky; they are always pushing ads and trying to get you to buy something. Ignore this, be patient, find Quick Clean Lite. It's worth it. Also, be aware that McAfee has two divisions. One is office based and the other is web based. I believe that Quick Clean Lite is office based (meaning that you download the software or buy the program and install it from a disk that they will send you). If the web site proves too daunting ( because of all the products they push) call them. Get this utility. It is worth it. I have used it for several years. It works with out a hitch. I would not be without it. 8)

Mark, I agree that we need to update the way that WinTOTAL installs itself so that a traditional uninstaller will work. (Our other programs -- Mercury, Vault, Exact, MapSnap, etc. -- all have uninstallers, so it's clear that we recognize the need.) We originally wrote our own installer for WinTOTAL because we have to install files on the fly every time an Instant Update is downloaded, and you wouldn't want an InstallShield screen to pop up 10 times if you downloaded 10 updates at once. But, as I said, on these other programs we have figured out a "best of both worlds" scenario and are using it, and will migrate that to WinTOTAL as well.

As for the issue with ACI, please realize that they've known for a long time that they were shipping an out-of-date version of a key system file. One of our updates months ago included the newer version of that file, and so anyone who installed it would have added the new version of the file, usually replacing the one being used by ACI.

It's important to remember that lots of programs ship with this new file, not just WinTOTAL. It's a common component of programs from many sources. Installing any one of those programs would have broken ACI.

That's why it's their responsibility -- every software developer's responsibility -- to ensure that they keep up to date with the latest system components in their own shipping products, and that they deliver updates rapidly when they get behind and see a problem such as this.

We've had the same thing happen in reverse several times, and we take responsibility if our file is out of date and some other program breaks our system links. We post an Instant Customer Update (ICU) and fix the problem before the rest of our users encounter it. That's why it's doubly annoying to see ACI taking this position of neither notifying their users nor posting an update. It simply creates more problems for their own users yet it makes us look like the culprit. (But it also gives them an "alert" that one of their users installed our demo, and so they can try to shut down a switchover, so there may be little incentive to do something at their end to prevent it.) Instead, ACI would invest some money in a proper proactive updating system like we did with the ICU, and avoid getting their users caught in the middle.

I'm sorry you're one of the ones who lost valuable time in your day due to this issue. Let me know if there's anything else I can do.
