From todays LA Times.
According to Lehman Bros., some 500 million PCs are too old to run Windows XP. Microsoft will not offer technical support for Windows versions 3.1, 3.11 and 95 after today. Windows 98 and Windows NT versions up through NT4.x won't be supported after June 30.
I can see 3.1 and maybe 95, but Win98? and NT? :x

That is pretty big. Heck, I am still running 98 on alot of my machines. The one I really cant believe is NT.

:? So what:

Microsoft hasn't supported much of anything...

Granted that lack of drivers and such is an inconvenience, but I guess that puts the onus on developers to present us the not updated user with something that works!

Support costs are huge. Doing this will save them millions every year. They did this for the same reasons Western Digital, and most other hard drive manufacturers stopped offering 3 year warranties, and are now only 1 year. It is just too much.

Personally I feel if you are still using Windows 9x, that is a major security risk. Upgrade it is much better. 8)

They want you to migrate to XP and 2000 Professional (which replaces NT). That way they continue to sell software. After all, if they supported stuff that still works but is just old, why people wouldn't buy their new stuff, now would they?

Exactly, it's the planned obsolesence that annoys me. Not that I ever call their tech support, but I do get the updated security patches and stuff on my Win98 machine. And I don't want to chance the "upgrade" of that machine to XP. I'll get a new machine first.
