Which sends data faster, a standard printer cable or a usb cable? Is anyone using USB for their printer?

Thanks

USB by far is the fastest, and I think that most people now use it for their printer, including me. The USB 2 standard is out now and is up to 40 times faster than the original USB so if you are purchasing new equipment be sure to get it.

Bill,
My printer has both parallel and USB inputs. I started with parallel first because I already had the cable in place when I installed the printer. When I got around to buying a long enough USB cable I switched over and it is significantly faster.

Is it possible to install USB cable instead of the old style? I have an HP2000, and an unused USB port.

Thanks for info. Always learn something new on this forum.

If you have a usb port on your printer and one on your computer just get a USB cable and plug it in. If you don't have a USB plug in on your printer it won't work. There are some USB to parallel adapators that I have seen, but I haven't tried them and don't know if you would gain any speed increase or not due to the fact that the data would still have to pass through the parallel connection to the printer. Also, I think they are pretty expensive as far as cables go.

I have the HP2200 and about a month ago I bought a cable that use the regular port on the printer but plugs into the USP port on the computer. Cost about $60-$70. Did speed up the HP2200, but there still is a hesitation at first, then it once it starts printing, it speeds up.

What about adding usb connections? I bought a hub a while back and when I plug items into it I have some problems. My pda is not recognized and my hp external cd-rw is not recognized about 50% of the time. If I unplug these from the hub and plug them directly into the 2 built in usb ports on the computer everything is fine. The problem is I have about 5 items I need to connect via usb.

Any suggestions? I'm using a 4 port external usb hub by Belkin. Maybe a better quality one.

Thanks for the cable info.

Bill the problem is not just with Belkin. Belkin is a good name in cables and ports. I have a Universal Buslink hub that that connects to my USB port and has 5 USB ports, a serial port, and a parallel port. So far everything that I have plugged in the USB ports works fine, however some things that I plug into the parallel and serial ports don't work, such as a scanner and a camera. It is hit or miss with this stuff.

Contact Belkin support and ask them what to do. They usually have a product list that will work for sure, and for those that don't work they have suggestions to make it work. When you get right down to it, there will be some things that just won't work with a hub, mostly the older stuff, and I can't explain why, because I don't know.

I saw a similar question on the previous board and I think that Ben answered by describing his Parallel to USB connection on the same printer.

After that, I looked at the Belkin device and it was around $50 at Staples. I am running two parallel ports and if I have trouble with LPT2, will immediately try that Belkin USB device. They also make a SCSI to USB device that is really appealing if it works. It is more expensive though.

I don't know if we can search the old archives but if so, the response is there somewhere.
