I have a client who says that when she gets a pdf appraisal from me, sometimes - not always - the signature gets blacked out. It must be a setting on her end, but I don't know what to tell her. Does anyone have any idea what it could be.

Which software package are you using to generate the original report?

Send the pdf to yourself and see what you get!

I would just redo the signature file and make sure it is in a format that is properly supported by the forms vendor.

You nip the problem at the source, it's what I would do.

They are using an old Version

Older versions of Adobe Acrobat do not recognize the signature or scramble it if receiving reports in version 7 or 8. Version 5, for sure won't recognize version 7. This is a known problem and is not very well covered on the Adobe website.

They need to upgrade their Acrobat Reader. They don't like to use Acrobat Reader because they can't mark up the report.

I ran into the problem with VA reviewers. They had version 5.

We ran into the problem recently with one of the signatures when having 11 copies of a 100+ page report in pdf (Adobe ver 6) format printed from a CD at Kinkos. The signature looked fine on the screen but had a thick black line under it when printed on their color Xerox. We had no trouble printing the page on our Lanier (Ricoh) or HP Laserjet color printers. The other color pages were fine.
