To re-register my car I had to get a smog test. The instructions from DMV said I had to take it to a TEST ONLY shop. A shop that also does the repairs was forbidden. So, I take it to a test only shop. $55 fee and it failed the test. So, I had to then take it to a shop that makes smog related repairs. It needed a tune up only so I thought maybe I would get away at a reasonable price.

WRONG. My car takes "platinum" spark plugs that cost $12 each. New filters including fuel filter, etc. Cost: $350. "Well," I thought, "now I have a deluxe tune-up so maybe I'll get better gas mileage." So I says to the guy, " Now I'm all set. I send in your report that the repairs have been made and I get my new registration?"

"Nope," he says, "Now you have to take it back to the test only shop so they can re-test it."

After ranting and raving for ten minutes I drive back to the test only shop. It passes. Cost: another $55.

So, $55 + 55+350 = $460+registration fee of $88. $580. Plus a half day of time. I started at 1 PM and got home at 6 PM

Next time I will junk the car. Hey Ray! Got any horses for under $500?

Oh, they emit green house gasses, too. You say I'll need a catalytic converter attached to its *******? And, I have to feed it organic hay? AND, if I ride it on the highway it will have to be registered and licensed with DMV?

Let me tell ya, our fees are not nearly high enough to survive in a "green" world.

Ouch. That "test only" place ripped you off. Most of them down here will re-test (once) for free.

I didn't think of that so I didn't go back to the original test station. It was too late in the day and the repair station guy recommended his brother-in-law's shop. You shoulda told me earlier, Cindy! LOL

I am thankful they don't require you to go to a ''retest only' station', after the repairs & the ''test only ''station. LOL

You should have registered your car using my address. No smog checks in Mendocino County.

I remember about 10 years ago when I was poor (really poor) one of my printshop customers owned a car repair/smog shop so I took my ailing 1980 Toyota Tercell for a smog check at his shop. No matter how much he fiddled with the carburetor it wouldn't pass. So he stuck the smog probe into the tailpipe of the car sitting next to mine. Passed with flying colors.

And, I suppose the pooper scooper what pass along the hazardous waste fee to the horse owner in addition to his $27.50 per hour. Yuck! Green poop?
