The annual study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition -- which compares an area's minimum wage to the average cost of renting an apartment -- found that Santa Cruz County was one of the least affordable places in the state and country.

Santa Cruz County narrowly edged out San Francisco, Santa Clara and Monterey counties for the dubious distinction.

Rich people gotta live somewhere too.

If you are an adult and you are working for minimum wage you have screwed up somewhere along the line. Minimum wage is called a training wage and is designed for teenagers, not adults raising families.

Santa Cruz county isn't one of the richest area which is the surprising part.
Anyway, minimum hourly wage of $63/hr needed to rent a 2 bedrm unit there highest in the nation, even higher than SF which is $61/hr.

The Salesforce Tower dominates the San Francisco skyline. Nearly 1,000 feet tall, it claims a prominent position in the center of the city. But the imposing missile-shaped building — which is lit up at the top — has a problem: it’s practically empty.
could change it to cheap condos.

It's zoned commercial. If Salesforce bldg can have condos then other bldgs in downtown can have condos. Only fair.

I am surprised some of the geniuses in SF haven't proposed turning it into a homeless shelter

Residential units don't contribute revenue to cities. They use up school and government agencies like police.
SF made money off payroll taxes, business licenses, hotel taxes, etc on commercial uses.
Homeless shelters and Drug programs are waste on government revenues which SF politicians seem to be more concern.

The city is dying Fernando. The politicians running the city don't believe in capitalism, they depend on government for their livelihoods and believe all benefits are derived from same. That only works for so long, but they don't seem to be concerned about the steep decline in revenues coming into city coffers.

Proposal to increase $1.50 on toll bridges is advancing to agreement. The increase is to help mass transit including BART and MUNI.
The MUNI public transportation system in SF is losing money and Federal and State funds are depleting and needs new taxes to "temporarily" sustain the public transits.
