Tomorrow -- 2/7/08 --- Overhaul of the GSEs??

The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on February 7 on legislation that would overhaul government-sponsored enterprises regulated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Scheduled witnesses include:
  • Honorable David G. Nason , Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions, Department of the Treasury
  • Honorable James B. Lockhart, III , Director , Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight
  • Honorable Ronald A. Rosenfeld , Chairman, Federal Housing Finance Board
  • Mr. Daniel H. Mudd , President and Chief Executive Officer, Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae)
  • Mr. Richard F. Syron , Chairman and CEO, Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac)

Are you sure this hearing has not been canceled?

I hear that Roger Clemens is scheduled to testify on the use of steroids and HGH in baseball. You know that those folks in DC have to consider that much more important and pressing to the nations future than to reform the GSE's.

Overhaul the GSE's? Never happen.

In case you've been living under a rock, Fannie went for nearly three years without issuing an earnings report. When they finally did, it restated billions in eanings (losses). And their penalty for this? Some in Congress now want to expand their mandate by raising both their portfolio levels and the max loan amount.
