I recently passed my state trainee exam and, fortunately, have a mentor willing to train me. I work in a small office so have access to a variety of opinons and work styles.

The general discussion forum has an interesting thread about time and money saving ideas. Along those lines, I want to share two things with other "newbies/trainees":

One of the most helpful hints I have received concerns the endless paper shuffle. For each comp, we print two pieces of paper - the MLS listing (or something similar) and the assessor's office information. He pointed out to me that it is more efficient to staple them together back to back, since it is much easier/faster to flip the information over than to lift the first page to view the second. Surprising how much time this simple change saves!

My other comment is on the value of these forums. I read them religiously, and print those that are either inspiring or educational on issues I know I will face in the future. I feel as though I have a couple dozen mentors instead of a couple, and it is so helpful to be exposed to differing opinions on how any particular issue should be handled.

My thanks to all those to participate and educate, and many thanks to Wayne for providing this invaluable service in such an easy to use format. How lucky we newbies are to have access to this body of knowledge and experience!

I've been appraising for 17 years and I didn't know that one! Thank you for your contribution.
