I am appraising a house with some sort of "pit" in front of the fireplace. It has a step and its all carpeted. What is this thing? The house was built in 1989. I haven't seen this before in houses in Maryland. To me it looks like a safety issue. I could see someone falling into it in the dark. I would assume this would be some kind of FHA violation. If anyone can tell me by looking at the picture below, I would be grateful.

It looks like a mini "conversation pit". Instead of a sofa, a recessed area with pillows.

This one looks like it was built for two.

It's simply a love seat built in. "Built-In Love Seat" or "Built-In Seating"

I think it was a small hot tub. Is that in the living room? or a bedroom?

I agree it is a mini conversation pit, or conceding to Glen a “love pit” since it appears to be built for two.

It is a bad idea...obviously functional/curable for Maryland houses, a love pit for little people... and also ugly. Good luck with that!
