WITH THIS NEW FORUM there is NO point in ever posting your email in the body of a message: EVER!!!

Use the Private message if you want to 'talk' to someone privately and you do not want them to have YOUR e-mail address... besides it is faster than e-mail, AND limited conversations can be selectively stored on line...

If you want someone to e-mail you, just e-mail them first or ask in the body of your message that folks contact you privately.

If you have any doubts as to the person e-mailing you, just reply through the forum private messager, then they won't get your address!

No more nasty opportunist spammers...
I got some pretty ugly stuff obviously marketed to single males with odd sexual habits after once posting my name on the old forum... since I am nearly fanatical about keeping my personal e-maill out of such folks hands, I think it came from the old forum format.

I am no prude but didn't know it was anatomiccly possible to for normal people to DO what some of pictures plainly showed. 8O

Thanks Wayne!

Lee Ann,

Spammers use "spam bots" (software) to travel the internet and harvest email addresses from web pages. But I would like to clear one thing up:

THIS forum it is protected from these automatic "spam bots"! Why? Because all messages are stored in a database that is not available to the spam bots. In other words they are not stored in HTML or text files where they could be harvested. All the data, email addresses from your registration and the like is protected. So if you get spam, they did not get your email address here!

However if you post your email address in the body of a message then someone could see your email address and manually put you on a list. However the bulk emailers deal in MILLIONS of addresses and don't have time to manually look through web pages so they only use the automated systems.

Spam is the biggest problem on the internet. It is illegal as well as unethical. It costs businesses and private users billions of dollars each year to deal with.

Another thing. There are many ways that bulk emailers can get your email address other than you posting in forums (again our forum is protected) . They have many tricks. I recommend, and use spam filter software so I never have to look at spam. The one I use is Spam Killer. Since I get over a hundred emails a day I don't have time or the patience for spam. With Spam Killer I never see it. Easy to set up and use. What it does is looks at all your email BEFORE you download it and it downloads the spam and deletes it from the server. You get the other email and never see the spam! It has other features also, but those are the basics. There is a 30 day free trial and it worked so well for me I couldn't wait to send them my money ($29.95) after only 1 week of use. The trial version is not crippled in any way and allows you to really see the benefits before buying.

I am not affiliated with Spam Killer (wish I was), just a fan.

Glad you like our private messaging (PM) system!

OK wayne: so every time your name is mentioned you always find the post in short order... or was it my (deliberately) slightly provokative title to this thread?? :D

I posted this due to some confusion expressed to me on the subject: thought I'd clarify!

I am not affiliated with Spam Killer (wish I was), just a fan.
Are they publicly traded??? :D

I am going to give that a try... I have set up Explorer such that it filters about 80% of the junk, but some filters through anyway and really irritates me. The pictoral content of a few of them was way beyond what I want showing up on a screen that can be viewed by my daughter 8O

Glad you like our private messaging (PM) system!
That is a significant benefit as far as I am concerned. Ditto the ability to e-mail someone 'blind' IF and only IF I chose to.

In all seriousness this new forum format has both postive and negative aspects: The water cooler isn't as much fun because one cannot reply in offshoot threads to individuals: the linear result makes following the spin-offs difficult or impossible (uummm we won't discuss why this of such interest to me- I spent way too much time over thar!  )

I HAVE observed that posts here are no longer searchable though that "find your posts" site as discussed on the old forum format. I was astonished to find everything I wrote was obtainable by searching my name! I was not necessarily thrilled to find that out.

The email and private messenger privacy aspects are FANTASTIC!!!

You did real good in finding this and setting it up.

One of the reasons I almost always end such posts with Thanks! Wayne!!!

Why wouldn't you want your posts to show up, isn't that why you post them, to be read?

If there is something you do not want to share with the world then don't post it to begin with because once posted it will here. However you CAN edit your own posts with this system so you can change something if you later regret saying it.

No system is perfect. You have internet newbies mixed with veteran netizens and nothing can please everyone. This system is one of the best I have seen. I have been online since 1991 (but I didn't invent the internet) and have owned and used a computer since 1984 so I have seen a lot of changes over the years! But I am by NO means an expert on computing or the Internet!

Just a simple guy trying to get along in a complicated world.

sorry if I have offended...

What I was trying to convey is that I was displeased to find that comments made in the OLD watercooler were searchable by asking for my name on www.google.com. See thread on old website Oct 2001 initiated by Pam...

I was not thrilled to find out that all my comments on other subjects could be viewed out of context right along with my comments on professional subjects, ALSO taken out of context.

This new set-up does not permit that that...

If someone searches for 'all posts by' they must go to the individual threads right on the forum, rather than viewing only the individual posts out of context. I never write anything I do not feel comfortable with... unless I unintentionally make some one mad: most of the time if I make someone mad it is quite deliberate!

I think this format is good. I like the forum. I should shut up now?

sorry if I have offended...

Ha, you didn't offend, I was just explaining how the system works! I guess I should have used some of these :D :D :D

What I was trying to convey is that I was displeased to find that comments made in the OLD watercooler were searchable by asking for my name on www.google.com. See thread on old website Oct 2001 initiated by Pam...

Google is a spidering search engine that crawls the web. All web sites will eventually show up there. I am not so sure that the posts on the new format won't either, it just hasn't been enough time yet. I don't see the harm in it, when people click on the Google link they will see the full text of your post and understand. All the time when I am searching for technical or other information I end up at bulletin boards that I reached by entering a search term such as "perl scripting" or something like that. Then when I click the link I usually find something that is about what I wanted to find. I usually find new bulletin boards that way. Believe it or not I don't spend all my time at appraisal bulletin boards.

I was not thrilled to find out that all my comments on other subjects could be viewed out of context right along with my comments on professional subjects, ALSO taken out of context.

Google and all search engines index just a small amount of the text for the pages they crawl. But anyone searching will know that and click the link to get the full message if they are interested. Unless you are sharing some deep dark secret no one is really that interested in these posts.

This new set-up does not permit that that...

I am not so sure that the web pages won't end up in the search engines. Again, I don't see this as a bad thing. If you were an appraiser and you did a Google search for something such as "USPAP" wouldn't you also want to see the forum messages about it? What I am saying is that your email address won't end up in a search engine.

Only if you fully understand that I was only trying to explain the system to you and I was in no way offended and that I would in no way intentionally compromise my users email addresses or do anything to harm them.

I am moving this topic to the Forum help section since it is about the forum software.

I get so much Junk emails that one more piece dosen't phase me in the least, I just delete it and move on. It's just a hazzard of being on line. I'm three times seven so nothing offends me.
