I took an assignment and asked what the retained fee was so I could report it.
I am paid $65 more than the AMC is getting.

Should I report this as AMC retained fee: $0
or should I say AMC retained fee: $-65. ??

Have they paid you yet? They may retain more than you think! Once upon a time there was an AMC called Appraisaloft.........

My understanding is the way it should be reported is something along the lines of (and I'm making up the numbers here):

Fee charged by the AMC to the client is $400

Fee paid to the appraiser by the AMC is $465
