Wood Shake Single Roof

A while back they would add a fire proofing coating to these, but where I live, the city would never let you have anything that could possibly catch on fire.

Along the coast here, the old summer cottages would have, Cedar Post Pilings for structural support and with the sea washing in & out, would last somewhere in the area of 100 years, more or less........it depends.
timd; 50 years for roof shingles is about right, installed a few when I was younger and their still working well today. Unless somebody is shooting Flaming Arrows at you, fire is the least concern.

Some municipalities and/HOA's have grandfathered them in but you cannot replace them. Also, property insurance on houses with shake roofs are very high.

It must be awful to have no roof when the wood shake roof wears out, lol

They were outlawed in Texas when, after new homes started to feature wood shake roofs, fire departments started finding out an attic fire would race through the attic area and cause far more fire damage than a comp or tile roof. Insurance rates jumped through, well, the roof. So while existing roofs were grandfathered, no new shake roofs could be installed.

You could drive past a home that had been damaged by a fire with a wood shingle roof, and while the base walls would be intact, there would only be a few charred rafters where the wood shingle roof once was. The smoke and water damage from putting out the fire would effectively total the home.
