I've used Excel for the last 15 years or so. Just a simple spreadsheet program of any kind is basically all you need. Microsoft works comes with an excel type spreadsheet that works quite well, or try "Open Office" and open source version of microsoft office. Not quite as polished, but it works well.
I have a nice little log application that I developed for my office. I got tired of using just a spreadsheet. It autonumbers the reports and keeps track of completions, inprogress, cancelled, etc and has several performance reports built in. I can demo a copy for you and if your interested, sell you a license to it. Contact me via email at tech@absolutecomputers.com with a phone number and best time to call.
I have use Appraisal log forever. It's based off of access 2000. It has always worked well for our company. Here is a link to the website http://www.appraisallog.com/
