Afternoon, I currently work in the banking industry handling appraisal review & some in house evaluations. In an effort to further educate myself I am starting the McKissock classes in January of 2023. I was curious if anyone in this forum would be of any help finding a supervisor appraiser in the OKC area.

I am in a little bit of a different position, as I am not looking to be a competing appraiser in the market nor a full-time appraiser. Just trying to further my knowledge & be more qualified regarding appraisals questions & reviews at the bank.

Thanks,

Drew

I don't know if it is possible or not, but can't you train under a certified appraiser at your bank?

We do not currently have a in house certified appraiser, as we are a small community bank.

I am a lender employed Appraiser (involved with residential, agricultural and all commercial types of properties).
We are 3rd largest community bank ag lender in the nation and 30th largest of all commercial banks that make ag loans.
If you want to send me a private message, I will provide my contact information and try to provide you some guidance for educational purposes.
If you are wanting to get an Appraiser license, my help would not benefit you from an experience standpoint.

Drew, I don’t mean this to be a slight however, how can you be handling reviews for a lender with no knowledge of appraising? How do you determine if an appraisal is adequately supported and or USPAP compliant (plus a myriad of other items) to determine if the bank you work for should rely on it to make a lending decision? Do you farm them out to review appraisers?

I commend you for wanting to learn and take classes to further educate yourself for your job….but what are you doing now?

You are going to find out pretty quickly that the more you get to know about appraising, the more you realize you don’t know.

I didn't see - in the OP's post - where he/she said they had no knowledge of appraising?

Fair question. No knowledge of appraising wouldn't be technically correct, while I do agree the more you know the more you realize you don't. I have taken several courses covering appraisals, appraisal review, & USPAP regs through the American Bankers Assocation as well as the Oklahoma Bankers Assocation.

Good to know! Good luck with you continuing education...

Good for you in trying to learn more about appraising. When I started working at the bank, I didn't know much but my supervisory appraiser would sign off appraisals with me.
When young, I didn't really care knowing my "boss" should let me know if I did something wrong.
And when the auditors came later and reviewed my reports, we got in trouble
I think we got a warning. Being young, I didn't care taking the blame.
Good thing I got my act together...I think.
