If a trainee works for an NJ based appraiser/sponsor, but does inspections in both PA and NJ, do all of the inspections count towards the trainee hours?

Must my signature be on every appraisal that is counted toward trainee hours?

What is the purpose of the trainee permit?

Thanks in advance.

Trainee Hours

John,

For the most accurate and reliable information, you should direct your questions to Consumer Affairs (Appraisal Board) in Newark.

Just from my experiences with the State, I recommend that you either email or write to them, so that you will have some written response from them to back you up. If someone answers your question (on the telephone) incorrectly and you rely on that info, you may encounter problems later on.

In my opinion, any work you do on appraisals is time to your credit. As long as the PA work is being reviewed by your supervisor, it should be counted. Also, you don't need to sign every appraisal you work on, but your log has to be signed by a licensed appraiser.

For instance, I may utilize you to do some information gathering at a municipal building (like assessments and zoning information) and for nothing else on that file. Since you did no "appraising" or valuation of the subject, there is no reason for you to sign the report. I may mention in the report that you provided research assistance. But you should still get "credit" for the hours you spent in research.

Again, the above is JUST my opinion, and the final determination must come from the State.

John,
When I applied for my license approximately half of my experience was from PA. The experience was accepted by the N.J. board. Yes you must either sign or list your participation on each report. The permit allows the state board some control over trainees.

John, be careful, I don't think PA trainees can inspect property on their own without an accompanying Licensed appraiser. Are you registered with PA as a trainee?

In PA a trainee CANNOT inspect a property on their own....yet. The board is considering letting a trainee with 300 hours inspect, but NOT YET. :)

STEPS TO BECOME A PA. STATE CERTIFIED REAL ESTATE APPRAISER
1. Call the PA State Board of Certified Real Estate Appraisers at 1-717-783-4866. When you get the voice mail system, press "2" and "2" again. You will be prompted to give your name, address, etc. By completing this step, you will be ordering an "application packet." This application will be mailed to you, free of charge, from the Pa. State Board of Appraisers. In this packet you will see a copy of the latest Pa. State Board of Certified Real Estate Appraiser's Rules and Regulations describing in detail all of the steps needed to become either a PA. certified residential or a Pa. certified general real estate Appraiser. You will also obtain a list of all approved schools that can offer classes for initial education for Pa. appraiser candidates. In this packet you will also receive an appraisal "log" onto which you record your hours as an appraisal "assistant." You will also receive other information.

good luck

is there any web site that i can download the log forms for new jersey? thank you

If you send me an email with your fax I will fax you a copy of the log form.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention

Quite frankly, the form is only for those who like to handwrite everything. I prepared a Word file that is a 99% duplicate of the copy they sent me.

The major difference is that it is preprinted with my name, license and supervisor's information. I just type in the pertinent job information, print a hardcopy and have it signed.

I will be happy to share it with others.
