What seems to be the most appropriate definition of a garage in relations to being attached or detached? If the garage has no inside "entry" into the "living area" of a dwelling but attached to a portion of the building from the back end and sticking out, would the garage be called out as detached or attached?

detached - no direct contact between the frame of the garage and the dwelling.

edited: above given as "definition" of detached to aid poster in determining what "attached" and "detached" really mean.

If it is attached in any way, then wouldn't that be attached? Detached actually means not attached. A covered breeze way is a form of attachment.

A mentory could have answered this question for you quite easily. Give him a chance to teach you.

If the house caught fire, would the garage burn down?

Depends on where the fire starts, how big the fire is, and how long it takes to put the fire out.

A detached garage close enough to the dwelling in certain situations could also burn down.

You could have a "built-in" garage, which would be attached but having a portion of the house over the garage.

Detached garages usually are on larger lot sizes to accommodate them as they usually are totally separate (not touching) the main structure or home.

If the garage is nice and a good place to hang out on a rainy Sunday and drink beers, then it's attached. If it's dingy and moldy, junked up with lawn tools, full of cobwebs, and a broken garage door then it's detached...

Why am I so right on this one? :-)
