I have never stock piled can goods before, but think war is imminent.

As the Boy Scout in me grows "Be Prepared" ...

I wanted to know how long a can of HUNT's Diced Tomatoes will last?

shelf lifes of foods ..... any web sites or homegrown info .....

.... never cry wolf ..... if you have a crate of can food in your abode. ...

Stores of Goods

The Stores of Goods and the good in "thier" storage is a prudent investment operation in turbulent times ..... what did Pharoah do when Joseph explained his dream about famine ..... prepare yourselves ........ and did it with peace ... and be ready ... for the day is here ....

Here is a link thay may be useful...

Even more important that food, is water. You can survive longer without food than you can with water. I have a 10,000 gallon pool, filter, propane camp stove and bleach. I have read that you can purify water, but I hope I never have to find out.

Another thing to keep on hand is pet food, for your pets of course!

Linda, if you use chemicals to keep your pool clean, you can't use it for drinking, only washing, toilet flushing, etc. An ordinary filter won't remove the chemicals. You'd have to get something like a Katadyn filter: http://captaindaves.com/shop/waterfltr.html

I was wondering about that. The link I gave has a link on the right side of the page about water and it does say that you can boil and bleach pool water to purify it, or filter it.

I thought those filters were a lot more expensive. Maybe I should look into getting one. We have had stories in the news of local water supplies being contaminated and they suggested boiling water for 10 minutes until the problem was taken care of. Only thing is, I believe 2 children died before they found the cause.

My parents have a water distiller, but I find the water tastes a bit flat. I have been drinking bottled water for about a year now, but still use tap water for cooking, etc. I do use a charcoal filter, but a purifying filter would probably be better.

City water tastes bad compared to the nice well water we had in NH!

The problem is, boiling and adding bleach doesn't remove the pool chemicals. I can't remember where I read it, but there was something about kidney failure from consuming too much. :( I checked with the Katadyn manufacturer and they did say their large ceramic drip water filters removed pool chemicals. I don't know about the small portable ones you'd take camping and hiking.
