Does anyone have a computer that they love for producing commercial reports? I think I have tried them all and none of them are perfect for the job. The real issue is when I start loading pictures and exhibits. It seems they all struggle with that and I can't get through a report without a shut down of some sort which sets me back. I prefer the macs, but they have their limitations. The PC I think is best for excel, but neither one seems to like the size of the files. Would love to know if there is a perfect computer out there!

The best computer is the one you build yourself, or have a local shop build for you. I build my own and have not been disappointed.

Not a commercial appraiser but I have a monster desktop replacement that I love! It is a Dell Precision M6700. Quite a robust beast. Weighs a ton though.

Sounds like you are trying to load overly large pix and maps into a word processor.

If that is the issue, obtain some copy of "RESIZER" . Move your camera pictures to a folder, and resize them...medium or large is easily clear enough. Like below.

The pictures are moved to a folder, all are highlighted and a right click pops up the menu - go to resizer pick small medium or large and click and each file is resized. The originals remain highlighted so I just hit delete and dump those. Smaller pictures will load faster and easier.

I also find that WP seems to edit pictures easier than Word but that may be an artifact of using Word Perfect much more than Word.

What is your current hardware? A 4 core Mac with 16 GB ram & a 512 GB SSD Samsung should get you where you want to go, using Parallels 8 (or 9) if you plan on using MS Word.

Just read up on how to optimally set up your VM if you don't go with the default settings. W7 runs about 90% of native speed on Parallels 8 except for games. If you want to go native, use Bootcamp or get a PC,

I actually think building your own machine is a mistake for most people. Why not go with a formula that has been "beta tested" by others? Imagine looking for help on a forum. What model & specs do you have? Instead of a brand, model, you have to talk motherboard, custom settings & whatever other variable you may have introduced. A specific model & brand coming up with similar problems helps all concerned track down a solution. One off Franken-models, not so much.

Do you use the resources monitor to help figure out what is happening with your current machine?

Are you running low on free RAM? You might have an application you use that has significant memory leak issues.

If you are currently using 16GB ram you should be able to create a report with a heck of a lot of photos. I assume you are using a 64bit version of W7, not a 32 bit, which cannot address that much RAM.

The new digital cameras with their very high pixel counts when taken at the highest resolution, can test many a program.

You might want to compress photos before entering them into Word? or whatever you are using for your reports.

I went with a Systemax from Tigerdirect.com. Built to the specs I picked, but I don't have to worry about all the little details of assembly, setup, and parts compatibility. :icon_mrgreen:

Many computers come with a standard 4mb of RAM. I do a lot of photography so I bought a Dell XPS with 12mb of RAM to handle the images and for quicker refresh when I use Lightroom. You get 16 or 32mb but it really wasn't necessary.

Being economical, err frugal, err CHEAP...I have had great success adding RAM via a flashdrive and USB port.

Cheap, easy and it worked...what's not to love?

The memory access speed is throttled big time by the USB speed bottleneck. Your average internal laptop drive easily is throttled if access is via a USB 1 or 2 interface.
