Is there a definition of what constitute a closet when naming bedrooms?
My subject has bedrooms with closet doors removed. May be it's the new style.
I will call it a bedroom but should I mention in report that the closets have no doors?

If you like, note the doors absent. But i come from the old days. Recently looked at an old house with 2 wardrobes. No closets. Prolly originally built about 1930ish. 10' ceilings.

I’ve been seeing people replacing closet doors with curtains around here lately. New trend maybe....

Its a closet with out doors why make a deal out of it my two bedrooms in back took closet doors off use both rooms as home offices -The doors are in my garage and i can hang them in 30 minutes if need be. Also there is not even any guidelines that say a bedroom has to have doors -I heard that on FHA for 35 years and never was able to have one HUD reviewer site the source . Gave her some history and her supervisor agreed its just something we have repeated for so many years many thinks it s guideline. At best its a market expectation in some areas. Prior to WW-11 millions of homes had no closets and people-for hundreds of years used " ARMOIRES" which where and are Furniture made to hold clothes. Today in Huber custom homes I have seen 25 foot long ones made out of oak and other woods very expensive. Also in Studio testaments in Cities that do not have separate bedrooms most do not have closets. After WW-11 the large Tract Builder of Levitt Town houses typical 800 to 1,200 square feet were the first large tract to have built in closets and after that it became the norm in tract built houses. Anyway thought I would give you a lesson in closets. A bedroom is a bedroom with or without a closet and you TRUCK is still A TRUCK even if you take off the doors and want to make it like a Jeep or you are a wanna be Crocodile Dundee : ) 1622127265788.png

There is no guideline that says that a bedroom must have a closet. What makes it a bedroom is a secondary means of egress. What the market thinks about it is a different issue.

Then what's the difference between a bedroom and a den?

In a one story home. Probably no difference as long as the floor plan makes sense. In a 2 story home with a first floor den and no first floor bath access. I call it a den

When the septic field limitations limit the house to 2 bedrooms the third is a den or library. If the area is then incorporated into a town sewer system the third room is then a bedroom if it has an egress window. What about the style trend where they put windows high on the wall in bedrooms, they today would not qualify as egress windows!

Answer: If the “bedroomdoes not have a window, it cannot be considered a bedroom. Well, technically a bedroom should have at least two methods of egress, which means in addition to the interior door it must have either a properly-sized window or a second door to the exterior.

Well we have hundreds of thousands of homes in LA County that were built in the fifties with bedroom windows that no longer meet State-City-County building codes but those are still bedrooms and to remove existing windows and install new ones that are code is very expensive because most were built with lath and plaster not drywall and some built with bricks etc. So it is what it is and we do not call for new windows to be installed and neither does the code enforcement gestapo BUT you better not do any remodeling because when Nurse Rachids twin sister shows up in her Femanzi Uniform she will hand you a nice yellow citation telling you that your windows do not-meet current Fire Marshal standards and when you tell her thats going to cost you $30.000 She will tell you too-bad apply for a City Rehab loan and when you tell her-you can't afford any more loans she will UN-politely tell you that maybe you cannot afford to live here and maybe you should consider a desert like Phoenix to move to.

I wonder if thats why being in our local code gestapo is a more dangerous job than being a cop and the idiots at one point wanted to be deputized so they could carry guns. One last year wads found in a dumpster and another got whacked on the head with shovel and now they only patrol the good side of town and send out drive by citations over in Felony Flats.
