TAF also sells or licenses for sale the student manuals for the courses.

The big break between the AI and TAF was over allegations that TAF was overstepping their mission and getting into direct competition with the professional orgs for selling education and other non-standards consultation services. That disagreement has not yet been resolved.

TAF is not for profit but certainly that does not mean they do not have an incentive to expand their domain for the purpose of, well...expanding their domain. Everyone wants to be bigger. I do agree with AI that TAF has no business in the education business.

A number of appraisers share that sentiment.

Why is the USPAP manual so expensive? It doesn't cost that much to print it and it's terribly written. I'm forced to pay it every 2 years.

The manual is one of the primary sources of income for The Appraisal Foundation. Their "not-a-government-agency" status means they have to seek at least part of their income from the market - meaning us.

That won't endear TAF to many of its critics, but it is why we pay for the publication.

As for "terribly written" that goes back to it's various intended uses and intended users. It's not intended to be an instructional manual.

For the first time reader of USPAP, it's difficult to read. I was confused the first time. That's why takiing USPAP course every 2 years (like 10 times) helps us understand the material. Every two years, minor changes.

You live in the wrong state. Virginia provides a free copy to each licensee every 2 years when the new edition comes out.:icon_mrgreen:
