Mayne, who speaks nationally about the problem of mortgage fraud, said the majority of wrongdoing by loan officers goes undetected, which makes it an extremely tempting crime. He said what happened to him, however, serves as a lesson not only to other mortgage lenders but to business people in any industry.
"It is not enough to ask yourself, 'Is this illegal?' ” he said. "You need to ask yourself, 'Is it unethical? Does it look bad. Does it not feel right?' ”
