I'm thinking of deleting 3 years of business emails in outlook express. I wonder if anyone else keeps them for a good reason, or if you save them? If you do save them on a cd or something how do you save them?

It's been a while since I used OE but here's the step by step I used when syncing the notebook to the desktop. To use as an archive would require performing the following tasks now (to create the archive) and then again in the future to backup your newer emails, then delete the newer emails, and restore the archive. Then when you're through delete the restored archive and restore the newer emails. :rotate: :scrambled:

Make a copy of all the files in the folder that contains the dbx files,
C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{#}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Also do a search for *.wab and back that up as well (address book),
C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

EXPORT these 4 registry keys to the desktop:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express
(Where GUID represents your Identity number.)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name

To copy the messages to a new machine, copy all the files to the exact directory where they were located in their previous life.

Then, before opening OE, IMPORT the 4 keys into the registry. If OE has already been run on the computer to which you are restoring, then DELETE those 4 keys from the registry (back it up first) before importing the 4 saved ones.

To backup and restore a single OE5 mail folder, save the appropriate dbx file. To restore, create a new folder in OE5 (call it archiv1, for example) and access it once. Then close OE and find archiv1.dbx and delete it. Make a copy of the folder you want to restore and rename it to archiv1.dbx. Then copy that file into the directory where the previous file was deleted. Open OE and the messages you wanted to restore will be accessible via opening that archiv1 folder.

If they are important enough to keep, I print them out and put them in the file. I don't keep any stored in OE. That's reserved for jokes and forwards! :D

A-ight cuz .... where did you cut & paste that from???

There's no easier way to do this? I don't want to spend more than 5 minutes on this, otherwise I don't mind deleting them all.

You can use the "File" "Export" command which will allow you to open them in the future in Outlook or MS Exchange.

Actually, from this Tennessee HILLBILLY'S website! Scroll down to Outlook Express FAQ Page and it will take you to his OE Help website. And yes I did cut-n-paste that several years ago! The text file is still stored in my "C:\My Documents\Aw Crap How Did I Do That\" directory.

Yep, that's the way I migrated from Outlook Express to Outlook. I don't know if you can import back into Outlook Express or not.

It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes Ben. You may want to check the OE Help website Ben, he may now have a much simpler way to accomplish the same thing.

You should really be afraid that I know you so well ...

Amazing! I delete my emails a dozen times a day. Only thing I keep is outgoing and that is just for a couple of days to be sure they reached the client.
