I am new to the VA panel.

A garage had rotted wood. I called for replacement of the rotted wood and to scrape and painted the peeling paint.

The client told me to go and do the final inspection.

They also said that the wood used was CCA treated and did not have to be painted.

My question is whould you have the wood painted to match the rest of the garage?

In the past , I have always had the wood painted.

Thanks

Cosmetic adornment is not an MPR.

What is CCA treated??? I'm familiar with pressure treated but not with CCA.

Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA)

It's the green color in wood. For outdoor use only I think.

Same thing. The stuff Can is talking about is added to the wood under pressure to insure the chemical absorbs through the entire piece of lumber. Makes the lumber insect proof.

Scraping and painting is only needed for peeling paint for homes built when lead was still
a component of most paints.

I don't believe pressure treated lumber needs to be painted to protect it from weather. Pressure treated lumber should never be used for interior purposes, as the CCA is poisonous.

There was talk that CCA pressure treated lumber was becoming an environmental issue as the poison starts to leach out if the wood over time and exposure to rain.

Having the wood painted to MATCH the rest of the garage is a cosmetic issue and not a safety issue.

[CCA] Makes the lumber insect proof.
actually I think it acts more as a bacteria and fungicide proofing material - anyways it is a chemical. Many want to ban it.

Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) does not protect the wood fibers from damage due to sunlight, or keep the wood from swelling due to rainwater, or shrinkage.
CCA treated wood weathers; Look at what a CCA treated wood deck looks like after 5 years w/o any maintenance.
Long story short, to protect & preserve it, it needs to be maintained, and paint is one method.

NOTE however that fresh-from-the-lumberyard CCA treated wood is (usually) unusually heavy per board, because it's frequently chock full of water/moisture. Painting fresh wood like that is asking for bubbled-up paint surface; best to let it dry out for a season or two.

Treated wood does not have to be painted. CCA is not available for residential use anymore due to the A -Arsenic (phased out in 2002) Replaced by ACQ, not nearly as good IMHO. Had a carpenter bee try to nest in a piece as I was installing it.

Thanks for the response's. I just wanted to check because I did not want to get a VA deficiency letter.
