Hello Everyone! This is my first post on this site and would like to thank everyone who is helping people like me with much needed information.

We live in Avoca borough, Luzerne county, PA in a 2 unit home ( duplex) with one unit on top of the other. Since our kids are getting older we are planning on occupying the upper unit also. We could use the extra bedrooms up there. The home has one water meter, two water heaters, 2 gas furnaces for heating, 2 electric meters, 2 kitchens and separate front doors.
We realized if we break down a wall on the first floor it will lead us to the stairs that would take us to the second floor. All we want is to break down that wall. We are planning on keeping the meters, kitchens etc the same way they were always.

I spoke to the county property tax assessors office and they said duplex houses have less taxes than single family houses in this county.

Can any one tell me if our taxes will go up if we just break that wall and leave the meters , kitchen etc alone? Does opening up a small wall change the house from duplex to single overnight and change the tax rate?

Thank You

Have you asked the question to the assessor?

The assessor's response might be more pertinent than anything that you will receive here.
