Does anyone have a sample template for a good engagement letter for a date of death valuation that they would be willing to share?

Alamode has 2, one more narrative than the other, that I have used and used as a template for making my own.

The Appraisal Institute has a good template to write your contract letters.

a la mode has an Engagement letter, and a Agreement For Appraisal Services. I use the Agreement for Appraisal Services for standard estate work.

Doug, one of the things I would make sure of is WHO your client is. In estates I typically prefer it either be an estate attorney or the executor of the estate. Often times when there are several heirs you can be bombarded with questions individually and that is something I do my best to avoid.
I have always offered to deal directly with the executor of the estate, I request payment either 1/2 up front and the balance at delivery or all up front and I have always offered to meet with the heirs as a group to answer their collective questions so that all hear the same answers at the same time.

I have found doing this simplifies the process of delivery and explanation.

Good luck.
