OK, I am 100% positive that FHA requires a fire door from the house to the garage.

100% positive.

However, I can't seem to find any reference. I've looked through the handbook, and I'm guessing that it falls under the umbrella of health and safety, but I would really like a reference.

Any help?

I cannot state with confidence a requirement exists or not for a fire-rated door. I always check the floor level in the garage. It should be lower than the living area by at least an inch or more. The lowered floor level in the garage permits the products of combustion that is heavier than air to flow out through the garage door and does not penetrate the home.

It's in the ICC building code, not FHA.

MM is correct, as the requirement for "Fire doors" hasn't been around forever, many homes do not have proper separation according to newer codes. Many houses also have plywood or paneling on the garage wall adjoining the house, which would not meet current codes, but is not a FHA MPR. Not a bad idea to mention it, for CYA sake, but make the DEU decide if they want to make the HO meet current codes.

It is in the Uniform Building Code which is what most municipalities use.

Interesting side note. The Uniform Building Code does not allow a door from the garage into any sleeping room, i.e. bedroom.

So, apparently, I wasn't 100% sure.

Gotta love learnin', though!

Not FHA...........
