A few years ago, in the course of researching the modular vs. manufactured home debate, my sponsor was told that a manufactured home will have a red HUD tag and that a modular home will have a green HUD tag. This was told to him by a representative of a home manufacturer.
I've been getting more than my fair share of "it's a modular" and "it's not a manufactured home anymore because it has brick/stucco on it", and consequently have been doing some research and reading a lot on this forum about the differences between manuf./modular/stick-built. Nowhere in my research have I come across anything referencing a green HUD tag for a modular home, or a green HUD tag period. In my two years I've never seen anything other than a red, orange or faded silver HUD tag, and they all say something like "this manufactured home complies with" etc. etc.
From everything I know at this point, it's my opinion that if it has (or had) a HUD tag, it's a manufactured home, period. Homes manufactured to the HUD specifications are just that... manufactured homes. Homes built in sections/panels/units to be assembled at the building site to national or local codes other than the HUD codes could well be modular, but HUD doesn't oversee modular home construction, correct? And therefore this "green modular HUD tag" shouldn't exist, right?
Thanks in advance. I've searched on this topic and so far haven't found any answers.
