Digging through some basement boxes, I stumbled upon a neat treasure.

Back in '79 my parents went to Hawaii. Big expensive trip for the day. 2 weeks of memories while I stayed with grandma. :icon_mrgreen:

Anyways, I found a very interesting real estate ad book. A good 30 pages of ads for condos, land and homes. Condos were being offered for $150k-$175k, homesites for $25k-$50k. My favorite was a 7 acre parcel that offered private beach front and mountain access to the back, complete with a modern (for the time) ranch style home. All yours for $750,000. I'll take two.

The thing that caught my eye in a few ads was the very prevalent marketing term 'fee simple ownership'.

I know we have one or two representing the 50th state. Just wondering is this an unusual amenity? What rights would you be missing owning land in Hawaii?

Thank you.

We were out there in the early 80's, visited the Hawaiian Marketplace, a large open-air shopping center. While there we saw a booth advertising lots in Royal Gardens on the Big Islands. They would fly you out to show you the lots. At the same time, the volcano began erupting, and proceeded to bury most of the subdivision. Should have taken them up at the time, would have had a close-up view of the eruption. Sure wasn't gonna buy any land.

BTW, the land under the lava is still owned by all these property owners, just can't use it
