I am looking for a source for historical residential building costs in California, circa 1988.

Historic index from M & S or NBC...
Buy the book. The index is there that allows you to go back in time with a multiplier

What do you need the information for?

I would probably just extract it from 1988 new construction sales.

This is good. You can see how construction costs doubled between 2000-2020, doubled between 1980-2000, but quadrupled between 1960 and 1980, and tripled between 1940 and 1960.

This completely debunks the idea that low rates is why home prices have increased too much.

Then prices doubling and tripling in CA are reasonable.

This completely debunks the idea that low rates is why home prices have increased too . The cost of cost new in my area is often 65% to 75% land cost. BUT YES IN AREAS where land hasn't gone up much then the increase in construction and materials was the big factor.
