I am looking for a source for historical residential building costs in California, circa 1988.
Historic index from M & S or NBC...
Buy the book. The index is there that allows you to go back in time with a multiplier

Thanks. I can see the SwiftEstimator online allows you to trend it to an earlier date. I didn't realize that.Historic index from M & S or NBC...

Then prices doubling and tripling in CA are reasonable. This is good. You can see how construction costs doubled between 2000-2020, doubled between 1980-2000, but quadrupled between 1960 and 1980, and tripled between 1940 and 1960.
This completely debunks the idea that low rates is why home prices have increased too . The cost of cost new in my area is often 65% to 75% land cost. BUT YES IN AREAS where land hasn't gone up much then the increase in construction and materials was the big factor.
