Hi,

I want to take my laptop on vacation and be able to remote control my Office PC from the laptop from the hotel room.

Can anyone recommend a good remote control product.

I’m running Windows 7 on my office PC. The laptop is running XP.

This is only for making little changes on reports and not for processing a full report from scratch.

It’s been about 9 years since I used PC anywhere. I here that GoToMyPC is very similar to PC Anywhere.

I have used GoToMyPC for years and can highly recommend it. They offer a 30 day free trial, so you can try it on vacation and then decide how you like it before you pay anything.

Log me in (all one word plus dot com) is free on two computers. You cannot print files or transfer between the two but you can 'email' files and print them on site. Works well. I have used it for several years.

I see there is an ad for it on the forum. ;) Love those google cookies.

What version of Windows 7 are you using? The pro and ultimate versions have this built in, the home version doesn't. It is called remote desktop connection. Having the pro or ultimate version means that you don't have to pay monthly like GoToMyPC.

I use Logmein also. Works very well, especially for free.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on my office machine.

I can see the settings to let others control this Win7 machine.

But it looks like I will need to install something on the XP laptop...right ?

I can upgrade to Windows 7 Professional for $89.95.... I see that button too.

But thats cutting into my vacation beer and lap dance money !!!!

The settings in the home premium version are for remote assistance, not the remote desktop server. This version of Windows has the client but not the server, so you could connect to my computer but I could not connect to yours. I would suggest that you try one one the trial/free versions of LogMeIn/GoToMyPC before you go on your vacation. Make sure it works before you leave the home PC. Make sure you leave the computer turned on when you leave, wake on LAN is possible, but is difficult to set up.

Tom - I have the exact same set up as you do; the office desktop is Windows 7 and the laptop is XP. I too wanted to be able to remote in, while on vacation, from the laptop to the desktop. I tried out LogMeIn and it worked perfectly. No glitches or problems. I've tried it from various locations both with my laptop and with a cheapie netbook too - and it works very well. As stated above they have a free version that is permanently free. Do try it out several times before you leave for vacation.

LogmeIn... free for individual user. You can not transfer files under the freebie version, but you can email them to yourself from your desk computer.
