One of the really attractive things about you all is that so many of you are concerned about our profession.

The unfortunate part is that so many of you are SFR mortgage appraisers and there does not appear to be any organized effort to get your message across.

It is time to pay dues to an SFR organization, that is dedicated to serving the interests of the SFR appraisers that care about the profession.

The organizations that currently offer designations are not getting the job done and don't want to, and will give it only lip service. Apaisal Advocacy seems stalled out.

It is up to those of you who care. I'm not a leader, can anybody help?

I am not the sort of person who is a leader either. I would be willing to support or participate in the development of such an organization.

It's been about 5 months since this thread, up next, do you take your shoes off. If any of you have ever run even a local organization or a softball league, you know the work involved, and it's all for FREE. Want to make a difference, everyone join the NAIFA en masse(Bingham, that means all together) and make a difference.

Every time this thread pops up all I can think about is Mickey Rooney saying "Let's put on a show!".

I have to agree that there are a number of concerned appraisers out there who are willing to don their professional outfit most of the time. Most provide lip service but want someone else to solve the issues for 'em. There is also a very large number of adquite appraisers out there who only want to earn a living while flying below the regulatory radar. There is a relatively small number of truely "bad" appraisers out there - and sometimes, it can be hard to draw a bead on 'em.

There are no professional groups out there for the box check'n, form-filler-outter appraisers and if there were, do you think that they would be able to adequately police their membership (and restrict their income)?

I don't know what the answer is - just maybe we really do need to go through a complete & utter financial meltdown in order to thin the ranks. Unfortunately, there will be a lot of collateral damage too.

Let's do some GUESStimates on numbers for an organization of SFR appraisers. I don't disagree we need a voice.

100,000 total appraisers

-15,000 commercial appraisers, so they would probably not be interested in membership.

-10,000 appraisers that near retirement or those who have retained their lic/cert but are basically retired.

-10,000 dedicated skippies - thus they are not interested in anything to do with ethical appraisers.

-20,000 that would not join because they just are not joiners or they have never heard of the organization.

-15,000 that are members of other organizations and would not change over to a new organization.

Soooooooooooooooo, what's the best method to get the other 30k into an organization. There is a lack of name recognition and no history of success or accomplishments.

1. Maximum dues of $100-150 a year for appraisers.
.....$50 a year for trainees.
.....$50 a year for all others.
2. Perhaps some small local organizations could be fully join in for the national impact.
3. Since organization would be starting on a shoestring, perhaps volunteer appraisers from around the country could provide email addresses of appraisers they know. Postage & printing expenses would probably cost prohibitive for a startup organization.

TC might have the right idea.................

Having an organization for SFR appraisers is not by itself going to do much.

The existing organizations seem to be centered on "selling" their members additional services and soaking them for dues, fees and charges for keeping a designation current. It's all about the money members represent as a cash flow to the organization.

The value of a designation serving an industry that is dominated by the lending industry is not worth the paper it is printed on.

The Appraisers Form is the closest thing I have seen that has any value to me, personally. I have looked at the AI and I love their books, which is the most value I see coming from them. Other than that, I don't need them and I would not join them.

My 2 cents: The NAIFA is the closest existing organization to what you want. The Dallas and Ft. Worth chapters are primarily residential appraisers, focused on residential appraising. The problem is that other orgainzations have poisoned the well. Further, other chapters are limited in what they do.

I wouldn't mind joining a Residential Appraisers Organization, but I wouldn't want it to be one more designation mill, but a true entity trying to influence change.

So, if they close shop tomorrow, where do you get your books?

Most likely from college and university bookstores. These same people who wrote those books would be teachers at higher learning institutions that are public or their books would be used in classes taught by others.

My choice would be to earn a degree from a college or university rather than join the AI and earn a designation. You pay for the degree once; you pay forever to keep the designation from the AI.

Just a basic appraisers organization. Only requirement for membership is to be a licensed or certified appraiser. Itshouldn't be hard to come up with fundamental universal agenda.........things like making it illegal to pressure appraisers; like making it illegal to withhold fees; address the DNU lists; provide probono peer review for complaints.......just very basic, generic stuff.
