Any organization that would be started would need to be set up in such a fashion that it did NOT have special designations. Either someone IS an appraiser or is not.
Making special designations is much akin to buying a status. Sorry, that is just how it is typically viewed.
And it's primary purpose should be to educate buyers of real estate, as well as educate and enforce appraisal regulations. A well informed buyer is merely an illusion, as most buyers don't buy many properties.
And spending a week watching re-runs of Flip this House does not prepare someone to make an informed decision. A buyers agent? They are after their own commission. Period. So, it would be in the best interest that appraisers made it clear that, in reality, we are the best choice for a buyer.
Not an advocate, but an impartial, unbiased source to help them protect their finances by not spending more on something than it is worth.
But I'm just a registered. What do I know? :rof:

If I understand correctly the designations are the organizations' way of bestowing some recognition for tenacity, test passing and perhaps even excellence. Do you think that is unimportant?

Yes, I do. In my opinion, all it is is akin to saying that 'we know what the standards are for becoming a member of x profession, but we are better.'
And before it starts, I am not directing that to anyone that has any designations as a personal slam. It is simply the way I percieve it.
Does AI have good education sources? According to what I've read of opinions on here, most have high regard to their CE.
But CE doesn't make someone a better appraiser. Nor does a special designation.
Truth be told, the way people should be appointed to the state boards should be by votes from the appraisers in the business, not by political appointee's.

I agree, a lot of that is present and designations do not make one better simply by possessing, but I do disagree that education is of no benefit. It does help if you learn something in the process of being educated. Frankly that is the objective I have.

Hopefully the designations stand for something more than the minimum required to get a license.

After I re-read my post, Edd, I realized that I phrased that poorly. What I meant to say is if two people have the same CE class, and one has a designation, it doesn't make the appraiser with the designation better. Obviously, we should all be striving to be the best around.
Personally, if I were at a lending institution and in charge of selecting appraisals, I'd want to see samples of their work, as well as a list of all their completed continuing education, so that it would be possible to select the best possible to protect the assets of the company.
