I haven't used my laptop since last fall. I opened it up yesterday and was notified that there were critical updates so I downloaded and installed them. Now, when I try to shut down the laptop the screen says "shutting down" but then just sits there and does nothing. I'm using windows 7 by the way.

Has anyone had this and figured out how to get past it?

Thanks

There have been alot of updates...maybe it is "digesting" them?...
or it hung up...I am guessing that you did a hard shut down...

When you downloaded the critical updates, did the computer restart and install those critical updates?

Just throwing an idea out there for this one. It couldn't hurt to try it...

Try restarting your laptop (actually going to Start -> Restart) instead of just shutting down. After the computer restarts, try shutting down and see if it works then. It might be that the critical updates didn't install correctly when you restarted/shutdown after downloading them.

Tony - You are right. After having the "shutting down" screen on for over an hour I did a hard shut down. Maybe that screwed things up. Today I let it run with the shutting down screen for three hours but still no luck.

Matt - Interesting idea. I did a restart and it went through the shut down fine and booted up fine. But, then when I went to shut it down I am again left with the screen stuck in the "shutting down" mode. I'll let it run this was for an hour or two and see if anything happens.

I'm getting ready to upgrade the laptop so this isn't a big deal but it is just puzzling.

Thank you both for your input.

You might want to go to the updates program and see what updates have been done. Try going thru the list and maybe pick a handful at a time to download instead of a monster bulk download..

Your only good solution is to do a RESTORE to most recent date before all the updates.
Then set aside time to download all the updates and let the install.
I've had big problems getting the updates to .Net Framework to install correctly.
I just don't let those updates install anymore.
I'd go see if Microsoft has an overall update / service pack you could install instead

My desktop did something similar on Valentines day and it has done its updates all along. It updated during the night and when I came in it had attempted to restart and was stuck on "start". It simply would not start correctly. I sent it to the shop and my gurus have puzzled over it. There seems to be a real serious glitch in the boot up menu that is the issue but they are trying running it and letting it sleep, etc. No luck. 10 days later and they are not sure it won't happen again. I left it there and let it run and see if it repeats.
