Someone just proved how easy it is to manipulate AI search results.
They created a fake luxury paperweight brand, planted three conflicting lies online, and watched 8 AI tools confidently repeat the misinformation.
The results are disturbing:
Ahrefs just published results from a wild AI misinformation experiment.
Their researcher invented a fake luxury paperweight company. $8,251 per item. Zero sales. Zero history.
He tested ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Copilot, and AI Mode with 56 questions.
Questions like "Which celebrity endorsed this brand?" and "How are they handling the defective product backlash?"
None of it was real.
Initially, most models handled it okay.
ChatGPT-4 and ChatGPT-5 got 53-54 of 56 right. They called out "that doesn't exist."
Gemini and AI Mode refused to treat it as real. Claude ignored everything.
Then he planted three fake sources.
A glossy blog claiming 23 artisans in Nova City with Emma Stone endorsements.
A Reddit AMA saying the founder was Robert Martinez running a Seattle workshop.
A Medium "investigation" debunking obvious lies but slipping in new ones about a
Portland warehouse and fake founder Jennifer Lawson.
All contradicted each other. All contradicted the official FAQ on the site.
After the fake sources appeared, everything changed.
Perplexity and Grok became fully manipulated. They repeated fake founders and pricing glitches as verified facts.
Gemini and AI Mode flipped from skeptics to believers. They adopted the Medium story completely.
Copilot blended everything into confident fiction.
Only ChatGPT-4 and ChatGPT-5 stayed robust. They cited the FAQ in 84% of answers.
The Medium piece was devastatingly effective.
It debunked obvious lies first. Gained trust. Then slipped in made-up details as the "corrected" story.
When forced to choose between vague truth and specific fiction, AI chose fiction almost every time.
The FAQ said "we don't publish unit counts." The fake sources said "634 units in 2023, employs 9 people."
AI picked the fake numbers.
After planting fake sources, Gemini and Perplexity planted misinformation in 37-39% of answers.
ChatGPT stayed under 7%.
The researcher’s advice:
Fill information gaps with specific, official content.
Create an FAQ stating what's true and false. Use lines like "We have never been acquired."
Claim specific superlatives. "Best for [use case]" beats generic "we're the best."
Monitor brand mentions for words like "investigation," "insider," "lawsuit."
Track what different models say separately. There's no unified AI index."
