Celebs are drinking a synthetic compound once used as dye. Can it really reverse aging?
Perhaps most famously, the German immunologist Paul Ehrlich experimented with methylene blue and found that it could treat malaria in sailors. Ehrlich coined the concept of the “magic bullet” — the idea that if you could find a chemical that binds to a certain bacteria or virus but not the rest of the tissue, it could help target diseases. He went on to do notable work in syphilis and chemotherapy, and his career was documented and dramatized in the 1940 film, “Dr. Ehrlich’s Magic Bullet,” starring Edward G. Robinson.
In January, Mel Gibson did an interview on Joe Rogan’s podcast during which he said methylene blue and the antiparasitic ivermectin helped cure three of his friends’ cancer — remarks that were countered by medical experts for lack of scientific evidence.
