WHY IS MORTGAGE FRAUD RAMPANT? HERE'S A CLUE
By Michelle Malkin · September 20, 2004 03:31 AM

In a story headlined "FBI: Mortgage Fraud Is Rampant in U.S.," the AP reports today that "fraud is running rampant in the nation's mortgage industry, with nearly three times as many reports of suspicious activity so far this year compared with 2001." The piece notes further:

Through the first nine months of 2004, mortgage companies and banks have reported more than 12,100 instances of suspicious activity compared with only 4,220 in 2001. The FBI currently has 533 pending mortgage fraud investigations, compared with 102 in 2001...ne common mortgage fraud scheme is "property flipping," in which property is purchased, appraised fraudulently at a much higher price and then quickly sold. The mortgage holder is then left with property worth much less than the loan it issued.
Other schemes involve fake identities and credit histories, use of "straw buyers" to conceal the true buyer's name and forged loan documents.

The article fails to mention an obvious factor in the rise of mortgage fraud. Hint: Open borders. There are upwards of 13 million illegal aliens in this country, and they are not all crammed in apartment buildings and homeless shelters. As I reported last year, "The American dream of home ownership, complete with the white picket fence, is alive and well for those who break our laws and break down our fences to get in." The Washington Post had trumpeted home loans for illegal aliens--just the tip of the housing fraud iceberg. More from my column:

A 25-year veteran of the mortgage industry in California confided to me recently: "It boggles the mind to think how many illegal aliens are homeowners in this country thanks to these programs, all fully insured by our government. Because of fear of lawsuits for discrimination I can also tell you that a lender may have a borrower who speaks little or no English who claims to be either a citizen or resident alien and it will not be questioned nor any proof required. Since FHA does not require any such documentation, a lender cannot cite their regulations as a basis for the request as they can on conventional loans."
Another easy avenue to home ownership is through the use of bogus Social Security cards. Moneylenders have no access to a verification system to check Social Security numbers before approving loans. A Department of Homeland Security investigator informs me that an ongoing federal probe of FHA/HUD-backed loans found that "a staggering number were approved to persons with false Social Security numbers." The Denver metro area alone accounted for 20,000 to 40,000 of the FHA-approved loans for suspected illegal aliens. "Even if a small percentage of the loans were foreclosed, HUD could be bankrupted," the homeland security official said.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. General Accounting Office told me this week that the agency's office of special investigations plans to report on the results of the probe later this fall. But "considering the size of Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston, and other large cities throughout the United States known to be inundated with illegal aliens," says my source, "I don't think the federal government is willing to expose this problem for financial reasons as well as for fear of political repercussions."

Nothing has changed.

Tom,
Thank you for posting that.

If what Ms.Malkin says turns out to be true, then I will be more than a little bit outraged.

At the risk of displaying my paleo-conservative colors, I LOVE Michelle Malkin. Anybody see her on CSPAN last night, at Berkley? The protesters were so rude, but she held up very well, I thought.

If we don't do something about our borders soon, our country will not be recognizable in 20 years. Even in dinky little redneck Dixie County, home of three redlights, we have a "Mexican Store," a car dealership that deals almost exclusively with illegals (it's funny...my husband is a deputy and every time he runs a tag, it comes back to one of the same two or three hispanic names...those guys sure must own a lot of cars.) It's only a matter of time before this trend spreads in to RE brokers. (As we all know, they're so famous for integrity.)

As a side note, locals here recently fought off a scheme by the son of a county commissioner to put in a "work camp" in a rural, isolated area that would house (in a barracks-like setting) something like 500 "resident workers." That's almost a quarter of the population of the entire town. What was in it for county revenues? Nada. They were going to have a "commissary" and would be trucked from job to job and would not be allowed to leave the compound. (Does this sound like PRISON to anyone else???) They wouldn't be doing business with locals, but would undoubtedly require lots of services, like deputies and ambulances. Not to mention all of the local trailer park landlords who've been housing them would be left out to dry.

I'm all for legal immigrants...but you should have to obey the law to be here. We do.

Amazing, absolutley amazing!

Illegal aliens are now the cause for fraudulant loans and appraisals.

Y'all never cease to amaze me.

Of course it can't be the corrupt mortgage company, loan officer, bank or realtor pushing the fraudulent loans thru.

Geez no wonder this has been a problem for over 20 years!

What does it matter if they are illegal from Mexico or Mars, a secured loan is a secured loan.

How many of those 12,100 suspicious activities are due to illegal aliens?

Being in an area that is very familar with the Mexican Border, Major problem is the lowest of the low of Mortgage Co's & you all know some of the lowest, they have office on many corners. It is not at all uncommon to see intrest rates of 15 - 22% for homes that TOP of the line is 65,000 most don't get past 40,000. Payments are based on a bi weekly NOT monthly & 24 hours late will incur a fee of a minimum of $50
As much as I dislike seeing the influx of Border Crossing individuals, watching them work in the fields & on construction I see Y they are here. Anyone on this Forum wants to TRY to keep up with a Mexican picking Watermelons I'll give $1,000 dollars to ANYONE on here can stay up with them for 2 days straight. HELL I'll make it easier than that laying a shingle roof in July.

As with all walks of Life & Nationalities there are GOODS & BAD in all.

Only TWO kinds of people in this world THOSE You can Count ON & those that DON'T Count.

Illegal aliens are not making fraud loans.

It's those who prey on their desire to have a place to live at a reasonable rate. Rents are outrageous when you have 4 or more kids.

So the hustlers work the system until the FBI catches up to them!

Well...we have a few that are preying on their own kind around here, mostly auto, bail bonds, etc.

But if the illegals were not here, the crooked Mort. brokers could not ply their trade. Many illegals are gullible, have a language problem, and are very susceptible to fraud.

We also have a lot of landlords who are "hot bedding" illegals, renting by the head to as many as can pack a house. The beds are used in shifts, with one or two per bed, 8 hr. a shift. Recently, Bentonville filed charges against a house for having less than 50 SF per occupant....a 1,200 SF house with more than 24 people living there!!
