The three Missouri Appraisal Institute Chapters (Kansas City, St. Louis and Springfield) are hosting a joint chapter meeting and educational event in Columbia, MO on Friday, September 28, 2007. They are offering two 7-hr. CE seminars that are FREE to chapter members and only $100 (including lunch) for non members. They are also hosting a dinner event that evening for an additional $25. Looks like a nice way to pick up some free or inexpensive CE and do a little networking at the same time. You can register by contacting Cathy Mifflin at cathymifflinaistl@msn.com or by calling her at 314-355-8890.

The commercial seminar is full. The residential seminar described below has some space remaining.

Maintaining Control: Dealing with Client Pressure, Appraiser Identity Theft and Appraisal Report Tampering
Instructor: Richard Heyn, SRA

This seminar is designed to give appraisers the tools with which to recognize and deal with client pressure. The seminar concentrates on providing vital information intended to enable appraisers to protect themselves against the growing problems of illegal use of the appraiser’s identity and altering of appraisal reports by third parties.
The objectives of this seminar are to help appraisers:
• Understand why client pressure has become increasingly more common
• Quickly and accurately distinguish between questionable, but acceptable, assignment conditions and those that are unacceptable
• Realize how relationships between the appraiser, mortgage broker and funding source create client pressure and foster an environment that can encourage appraisal report tampering
• Appreciate the danger and liability that currently exists from appraiser identity theft and alteration of appraisal reports by third parties
• Maintain control of the appraiser’s signature and signature file
• Comply with USPAP and State Board signature requirements
• Discover and employ high-tech and low-tech methods of combating appraiser identity theft and appraisal report tampering

The seminar has been submitted but not yet approved for Missouri CE. According to the chapters, “Given the newness of the course, it has not been approved for continuing education by the State of Missouri. The board will decide in October and CE hours will approved in retrospect to the September offering should the course be approved. The instructor/co-author of the course has a positive track record with getting approval for similar courses due to his experience in residential course development.”
